Most likely that noise is coming from the turntable motor (#1470 on the diagram). Remove the bottom panel to make sure. - The turntable motor Part number: AP2024912

Thanks Gene for your diagnosis. If you are correct will I still be able to use the microwave after the turntable motor dies completely although without the stirrer in operation? (Just thinking ahead and trying to save the $78 motor replacement fee on a 10 year old unit)

It is not recommended to use a microwave without the turntable motor on regular basis. Any food inside will heat unevenly and it can damage the turntable.
Where did you find such high price for this motor? APP sold it for $53.11

Gene, I thought the price of $78 came off of the APP web site. (I could have been wrong.) Anyway, I have a button to turn off the turntable during operation on my microwave. I tried this button stopping the turntable but the sound I described earlier was still there. When the turntable is stopped shouldn't the turntable motor stop too thereby eliminating the noise? Thanks for the help. Jeff

Jeff,
You are the only person who can pinpoint this noise. Try to do it and post the results.
Gene. P.S. If you will click on the picture or part number, you'll see the price and availability.

I have the same problem with a Whirlpool microwave and beleive the noise mis coming from the stirrer motor which I do not use nor was I aware of such and ability with a microwave. Is there any problem if I just disconnect the wires to this motor? Snowman29

No. The stirrer motor should work every time you use the microwave. It turns on automatically. If you will disconnect the motor, all microwaves will shot to the same point, causing uneven heating.

Gene. Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me exactly in order theparts that have to be disassembled to reach the motor? I would disconnect ittemporarily to confirm it is the problem then put it back together until getting areplacement. It appears that there was an upgrade to this assembly thatrequires replacing everything. Is this really necessary? Would they not have complete instruction as to how to upgrade?
