My Maytag had previously broken a belt and shattered the idler pully wheel. I replaced both. Now The unit shut down with the smell of something burning....obviously the motor overload protector because it works now. I want to know where the binding is likely happening...brake? misaligned Idler pulley arm? Any help would be appreciated.

Remove the belt from the transmission pulley and check how freely the transmission pulley is moving in both directions. Post the results.
