If you can please put your response in "idiot proof" terms because I am a newbie trying to self fix problems around the house. My frig will work perfectly and then after 3-4 weeks it starts to get warm on both sides. I shut it off remove the freezer back panel and notice lots of frost. After I self defrost it works fine for another month then the same problem. I see another post about this problem and the guy replaced the timer, therm and defrost heater. I tried doing what he did by turning the timer to the right by hand and the frig does go off, however it appears to me that the defrost heater is not working. (should it glow? be hot to the touch?) I ordered the timer, and combo heater/therm from you folks and returned it because I am not able to rearrange parts or make modifications. No problem with replacing the exact part if that is the case. I also read where you must ohm the heater first. No idea or how to set the ohm meter, however I know what they look like and can buy one. Please help and thanks.

With a bad one the heater won't work. Turn the timer again and see if the heater works. If the heater works then, replace the defrost thermostat. If it doesn't, replace the heater. Does the timer run. Does it come out of the defrost mode on it's own. Does in go into the defrost mode on it's own. Here's how to test the parts with an ohm meter. Thank you so much for the quick response. I hope you can stay with me during this process. When I tried to check the heater, as mentioned I did turn the timer by hand and the frig turned off. After some time the frig kicked back in (that means the timer works?, sticky?) I will be about due for another manual defrost shortly and will try to bypass the therm and check things again. In answer to your first ? no it does not glow and I had the light off to check. Do you or anyone out there happen to know if the heater replacement part w/o the therm is an exact replacement from the standpoint that I won't have to make any modifications? Wondering about that as I know it reads that the new ones have two elements for better defrost.

You won't have to make any modifications. It will clip on the evaporator.

Got to the point when I needed to do a defrost so did so this morning. Afterwards I used a screwdriver on the timer to move into defrost mode. Still nothing (no glow, heat) and also tried this by bypassing the thermostat again still nothing. I did not, however try to ohm the heater. After I set the frig to the usual temp it did come out of the defrost mode on it's own. According to the last post all signs are pointing to a replacement defrost heater. Prior to ordering online here I just would like to see a post confirming that there is no other problem. Thanks
