I posted a question last weekend about my whirlpool dryer and did not receive an answer. I cannot find the posting and do not ahve the mdel# with me, but please try to help me. The dryer started shutting off before the clothes were dry and there was time left on the timed dry setting. Although it would run on air fluff it would not run on any heat settings until it cooled down. I used AccuDry and it worked fine for a while but it stopped running the last time I used it when I opened the door to check on a load. Now it will not even run on air fluff. How do we find out what part or parts need to be replaced? If you think it is the thermostat, which one? A Model Number may help others help you. Off the top of my head I would say you have a blown thermal fuse. Could be that the motor was overheating in the past and this is why it would run a cycle and then you would have to let it cool down before running it again (the motor's internal thermal cut off was opening) If the motor was running slow then you have less air flow and possibly it blew the fuse. Normally this is on the blower assembly. Best way to check is unplug the unit, remove one wire from the fuse and check it with a meter, should be 0 ohms. Jiggery pokery method is: Unplug the unit Short the two wires to the fuse together. Tape them up so they cannot short to anything else. Plug the unit in and give it a try. If blown replace it ASAP as it is a critical safety device. Be sure to clean/check your blower wheel and your vent system. Check the drum rotation. Manually rotate the drum in the correct direction, it should rotate fairly easily. You may want to do this on a couple other dryers so you get a feel for it. If it is hard to rotate you will have to open it up and find out why. Here is a good site with basic dryer repair help http://www.applianceaid.com/dryers.html . |

I got your message but I am confused. The link goes to cabinet parts but I did not find the thermal fuse listed. I di find the belt, which I would like to replace as well. I also could not poen the wiring diagram document. Thanks somuch for sticking with me! Originally Posted by: denman

Fuse is Item 7 in Section 3.
Just click on the section and it will open.

My husband bypassed the thermal fuse as you suggested to test it. The dryer still did not turn on so he says it must be something else. What should we do now? First you have to check that you have the correct power.
L1 to L2 = 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral both = 120 volts
Next set the unit to timed dry and unplug it
You will need a meter to check the various components to see if they are closed.
The circuit path for starting the motor is
NEUTRAL , DOOR SWITCH , TIMER SWITCH 4 T/W, DRIVE MOTOR Start and Main windings , THERMAL FUSE , PUSH TO START RELAY contacts switch must be pushed , TIMER SWITCH 2 BU/BK , L1
It will not be a thermostat since none of them come into play until after the motor has started.
It does sound like you may have 2 problems a starting and a heating problem.
I am off to the lake for a couple days so hopefully someone else will jump in if you require additional help. |
