The noises are whining, whistling warbbling. attempting to reach humpbacked whales in the neighborhood etc. Is it likely the compressor going out and time to retire old reliable, or should I spend 100+ bucks to have a repairman come look at it?

If it was newer I would suggest the electronic control board but one that old probably doesn't have one. Post your model number.
