My 24 year-old Kenmore refridgeator freezer started making intermittant noises today. The noises are whining, whistling warbbling. attempting to reach humpbacked whales in the neighborhood etc. Is it likely the compressor going out and time to retire old reliable, or should I spend 100+ bucks to have a repairman come look at it?

If you can pin down where it's coming from it would help. You have a fan near the compressor and a fan in the freezer. If it was newer I would suggest the electronic control board but one that old probably doesn't have one. Post your model number.
