(The former owner was kind enough to leave manuals for things like ceiling fans and smoke detectors, but not for the appliances and I haven't been able to find a manual online for it.) how difficult is it to take it out and replace it?

Remove the outer panel, pump and motor,then remove the tree 1/2 inch tranny bolts and pull the tranny out.
