I turned on the self cleaning oven portion for the first time. The door locked and the cleaning process started. I left the setting for 3 hours. At approximately 3 hrs an error appeared. I cannot remember the number but I hit Stop and the door remained locked. A little while later the door lock went out and I opened the door (carefully as it was still very hot) and found that there was residue left in the oven. The racks have a coating of sludge on them.
I guess I am going to wipe all that stuff up once it cools down.

I wonder if this is correct? Anyone else have this issue?

You need to know the error number to have any chance of finding out what happened.

This sounds normal

Not sure what you mean by sludge.
It is normal to have white/gray ash left in the unit, that must be wiped up.
Most manufacturers do not recommend leaving the racks in the unit when doing a self clean, it will turn them dull.
Wipe them off and then wipe the edges that ride on the side of the oven with a small piece of paper towel with some vegetable oil on it. Otherwise they will probably not slide very easily.
