My maytag washer would fill and agitate but would not advance through the cycles unless we manually advanced the knob. I put a new timer in and it is doing the exact same thing....any ideas?

If you manually advance the timer and then it spins and works ok you likely have a wiring or electrical problem. Check all the wires to and from the timer, and clean the contacts with a good contact cleaner.
This type of problem is difficult to find, good luck.
