Is it a simple matter of unscrewing the old bottom element from the back wall of the oven, pulling it out and inserting the new element.....or does it require a service tech to replace the element?

Just remove the screws and slowly pull the element out until you can get to the connectors. If one of the wires falls off, then you will need to remove the rear panel to get it put back together so pull gently.
