Alright, let me try this again. I had everything typed up and getting pictures ready to post when my the page decided to freeze up. So here it goes. I am replacing the seals and bearings on an Amana LWA80AL. I have everything taken apart down to the inner and outer tube with the trransmission still attached. I got the agitator and the drive bell. I also removed the drive bell seal. Here is where I don't know what to do. The output shaft of the transmission is still sticking up through the tub. There is a washer around the shaft. The I.D. of the washer is smaller than the teeth on the output shaft. Under that washer is what looks like another washer. Under that is the big locknut. My question is how do I get the transmission off? The washer's I.D. being smaller than the teeth on the output shaft wont let the transmission come off and I can't loosen the locknut because it would pull the transmission into the tub. What am I overlooking here? I'm sure its something simple. Is the real rusty part just a bearing cover that prys up? Thanks Michael

Well after looking at the pictures that I took lastnight I figured that the part that is all rusty should just pop up. I did, simple as that. Its acually a seal. It definetly worn out.

Alright now that is left that I can see is the locknut. I assume that once the locknut is taken off the transmission will come out? After the three bolts on the bottom of the tub are taken out of course.   I have another question on this. I don't see it in the diagram and parts list, Model LWA80AL. Is it actually part of the drive bell seal?

Alright I got the locknut off. Took some heat from the torch but I got it. The plastic part of the nut was hard as a rock and didn't come off with the nut. I had to chisel it off the shaft.   I took the three bolts off the bottom of the tub hoping the transmission would come out. No luck. I took the ring out of the bottom of the tub after I broke all four bolts. So now it looks like this.  Now what do I do? I tried hitting the out put shaft with a rubber mallet but it didn't budge.

You can find the complete instructions in the Service manual (Page 5-45). You probably have to buy some special tools (part numbers in the Service manual). Gene.

Yeah I have looked through the service manual. I probably tells me how to do it, like remove so and so part. The problem with that is I don't know what so and so parts look like. I don't dought that I will need a special tool though. I do thank you Gene for your help though. I will just keep working at it till I get it apart or it breaks. Anyways I did make a little more progress. I got the inner tub and the lint trap out. I'm pretty sure the output shaft has to come out but I don't know how to get to the snap ring that holds it in out.

Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with this washer and I can not give any advise besides what is written in the manual. Maybe somebody else on the forum can help you better.

Go to www.applianceaid.com for specific info on this. You may need a gear puller to remove that hub. Just be carefull not to ruin the steel tub while removing.
