The washer tub fills with water, but does not agitate clothes nor spins. It empties at the end of the wash and rinse cycles only. What can be wrong, and is it expensive to repair?

Your machine has a diagnostic on the inverter, with flashing lights that indicate a code.

Here is how to interpret them.

Try resetting the machine first with the instructions in the link.

My guess is your mode shifter will need replacing, but see what the codes say.
