You can install the defrost heat probe kit to prevent such problem. It comes with the installation instructions. - The defrost heat probe kit Part number: AP3119957

I have the Defrost Heat Probe Kit #AP3119957 which I ordered to fix the freezer in a Whirlpool model #ER9FHKXTQ00 fridge which chronically freezes up. The kit includes a metal tube but if I try to insert the tube into the defrost drain tube it only goes half way due to the bend in the defrost tube. The defrost tube feels as if it is made of plastic. There was no heat probe in the fridge to start with. How hot does the heat probe get? Will using the heat probe without the metal tube be safe?
