So what are the basic steps to replacing the transmission?

I have it taken apart except for separating the transmission from the tub. Does it just get pounded out after removing the tub bolts?

Must I separate the spring from the transmission? Do I need special tools?

Please help if you can.

You really need a service manual to do this repair, and I cannot link it to you because Maytag will no longer let us do that.

Do an Internet search for a Maytag Atlantis service manual and see if you can get one for a free download or for a nominal price.
