My refrigerator makes a strange "knocking" noise, very loud, when the compressor and motor shuts off. The noise souncds like it comes from the compressor but I can't be sure. If it is the compressor, can it be replaced or should I replace the entire appliance?

That is the internal mounts inside the compressor. It could make that noise for another 20 years. The compressor can be replaced. If it bothers you, it would make a great garage refrigerator. You would not here it shut off out there. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
