The auger on my Maytag washer floats off the base when it starts agitating. I can push it down but it come right back up. Do I need to replace the auger or the base, or both? Thanks for any help.

Here is the parts breakdown.
Replacement parts for MAYTAG PAV3300AWW WASHER-TOP LOADING | AppliancePartsPros.com

There should be a bolt holding it down, see Item 4 in Section 9.

I believe what has happened is the auger has come off the post. I see the bolt but it's down inside a post. I'm not sure how to get to it to get it off. Any suggestions?

I had the same exact problem. We always have used a "Softener Ball" and just dropped the ball in the washer. On the top of the agitator where the Fabric Dispenser is. ...it says: "Fill to line with water. Add cap full of softener".
So we tried it. Filled the fabric dispenser with water, and a cap full of softener. And the agitator didn't float when the water filled at high level. And we added clothes like we usually do. It bobbed just a little bit when agitating in the wash cycle... but it kept it from floating so high it didn't agitate. Saved me $60 for another agitator.
