Hi All,

Our General Electric TBX22ZAZBRWW Refrigerator makes a loud clunking noise from the rear bottom after each cooling cycle. I am a novice. Sorry for the poor detail. My guess would be something has worked its way loose, but I not sure what to do or where to look.

This has gone on for months without incident, but time to resolve, if possible.

The unit works fine, just trying to avoid a costly emergency repair/replace.

Many thanks for your time and any input

That will probably be the compressor. When internal springs (suspension) break or wear out, the body of the comressor will start knocking against the outer case. Eventually, it will cause enough damage that it will no longer work.

Thanks for the quick reply - Is it worth replacing the compressor?

Keeping in mind my novice status :D

Compressor replacement has become one of those highly debated topics in this industry. It's expensive. You can expect it to cost naywhere between $500 and $1200, depending on your locale.

Also, No matter how careful we are doing the job, they lend themselves to a high prercentages of failure rate. You gotta really love your refrigerator to make this kind of commitment.

Just a suggestion…

I have known for refrigerator compressors to make this noise for years and not effect performance of the compressor. Mine at home has been doing it for 2 years now and is still running fine. I am not saying that this isn’t damaging something, just that it could last a long time making this noise.

So if you can put up with the noise now and then it may keep running for a long time. I wouldn’t suggest replacing the compressor because of this but it is up to you.
