I have removed the freezer section rear panel to discover the lower condenser coil completely frozen.

Inspection of (and continuity check of) the heating element revealed that the bottom heating coil was bad. I replaced the heating harness assembly (that included both heater coils and the defrost thermostat), completely defrosted the unit and it worked fine for about a week.

Next I tested and replaced the bad defrost timer. Worked like a champ for about another week, now I'm right back where I started with a frozen lower coil. Evap fan motor working fine. Just to recheck, I manually put into defrost and both heater coils glowed a nice red (though once cycled, the ice was not completely gone). Additionally, I've pulled the control board from the freezer door (fairly simple component) and it appears to be in working order. The drain in the bottom section of the freezer also appears to be "clog free". Door seals fine. Ice dispenser flapper fine.

Looking for advice on what I might do next?

Pasinir,

Sounds like you've done everything you can do, except,

Completely de ice the evaporator coils.

You can use a hair dryer, or hot water, and towels.

Remove all the ice from the complete coil assembly, then try it from there.

*** Remember to unplug the power cord first ***

Good Luck,

Thank you Joe. I have (previously on both parts replacements) completely defrosted with a hair dryer. Let me run one other thing by you. Is it possible that I have a bad thermostat (cold control)? Maybe I have an issue where the compressor is not running long enough, the unit goes into defrost and melts the ice cubes (partially) causing excess condensation in the freezer section that drips to the bottom then gets pulled up through the bottom coils causing my lower coils to freeze?

I ask this because after defrosting last night, I turned off the ice maker and checked some of the food in the freezer compartment. The food was only partially frozen and (by coincidence), the unit cycled into defrost at that vey moment (coils glowed red). This surprised me because the freezer apparently wasn't seemingly cold enough to require a defrost. Though I'm sure there's a flaw in my reasoning, there has to be some logical reason for the issue I'm having.

Appreciate your feedback.

Robin,

You almost had it right, (slightly backwards),

Have you noticed if, the compressor runs an excessively long time, or cycles in a short period of time ?

*** When the compressor is running and cooling, it also advances the timer motor in the defrost timer, when the timer reaches a preset amount of time 8,
10,12, hours, it advances into the defrost cycle and turns the heater on until the defrost thermostat opens and heaters turn off). ***

The more or longer time the compressor runs, the sooner the refrigerator goes into defrost.

Have you had any cooling problems, or warm temperatures ?

You may want to go to a new cold control, and check the wiring, to make sure there's not a problem there.

You should also check and make sure the defrost drain tube is not clogged or restricted, and is properly secured in the drip pan, so you're not sucking or forcing warm air up the drain tube and also causing the ice on the evaporator(I've seen this before, but it's not a common occurrence).

Good Luck,
