...think I accidentally hijacked someone else's thread (sorry) Hi, just new to the forum as I was troubleshooting my Refrigerator. Kenmore Elite 596.70003002 - or - Manufacturer # P1321305WG 20 cu ft bottom mount Ref. Warm fresh food comp Cold Freezer. First Findings: Evap fan not working (had a spare), installed it, worked fine for 2 days. Now: Same thing, Evap fan not working. -Forced a defrost cycle - turned till click, no real heat from defrost element. (honestly didnt wait too long tho  ) -Turned Def Timer until fridge kicked on again and waited for Evap fan - nothing. -jiggled wires, looked for poor / damaged connections, etc -removed the Def Thermostat off condensor line - plastic sealed(?) cap part is half off of it, just by handling it in my fingers (warming it up?), Evap fan kicked on. looks bulged out - perhaps frost/water from defrost cycles leaked and frost split it from inside. Its been a hour and its still working as normal - The defrost thermostat looks to be hooked to the Evap Fan wire(s) AND the defrost elelement - could this be what is NOT turning on the Evap fan once and while? Thanks, Kerry Read more: http://forum.appliancepartspros...m-107.html#ixzz12zjgoAk5 http://forum.appliancepartspros.com

Sounds like you found the cause. Replace the defrost thermostat.

Okay this is the item that the clear(ish) plastic has been lifted away from the metal body by about 1/4" - of course there is snow/frost during cooling cycles so I am assuming that water got in it and the freeze/thaw process damaged the t-stat. Photo taken from common parts section Part Details - WHIRLPOOL THERMOSTAT, part number: AP4003446Last night I turned that stat around so that the bulged side is downward hoping that by the time the replacement arrives there wont be additional moisture causing issues. Hopefull that fixes it....only thing left is defrost timer, but the second click allows the fridge to start. In the +/- 1 hour I spent checking this site, I've learned lots. Thanks!!!!!!
