freezer not freezing, no ice on coils, compressor runs constantly until you turn temp control down then shuts off, turn temp control back up and compressor kicks on again. not sure if this is a thermostat problem or something more costly. any help would be great. thanks

When you checked the evaporator coils was there any frost on them?
Since you said the fresh food side is getting some cooling there should have been some frost.

Note: That you have to check them after the unit has run for a couple hours. This is to ensure that you do not check them just after a defrost cycle which would have removed all the frost.

If there is only frost in one area, usually where the freon enters the coils or the frost pattern is very blotchy, then odds are you are low on freon.

If it is a low freon condition you will have to get a pro in to repair it. Often it makes more sense to replace the unit as finding/repairing the leak and then recharging the system will be expensive.

when i looked behind the freezer, the coils were very dusty but didn't have any frost/ice on them. the frig/freezer had been running prior to me checking it, i cleaned all the dust of the coils (and everywhere else) thinking that might have been the problem but no dice. i have looked at the schematics on your web site and am not sure if it could be the thermostat, the defrost timer, or something else.

I think you may have been looking at the wrong coils.
I have never seen dusty evaporator coils.
Dusty condenser coils is the norm so that is why I think you were looking at them.
You want the coils in the freezer (Item 15 in Section 6)

It will not be the thermostat since it is telling the compressor to run and it is.

If the evaporator coils are free of frost/ice it is not a defrost problem.

i was looking at the wrong coils, one more question, does my refrigerator have a defrost timer and were would it be located?

Your unit uses an adaptive defrost control (Item 21 in Section 2)

o.k. took the cover off the inside of the freezer after my wife unplugged it for a day everything looked fine (no ice/frost). plugged the frig back in let it run overnight with frig & freezer turned up to max cold and this morning neither were cold. the tube that enters the evaperator coils in the back of the freezer was coated with ice/frost as well as the top third of the top row of coils. compressor is running as well as fan below and so is the fan above the evaperator coils. you said something about low freon, is there a way to check that? thanks again for all your help

It does sound like low freon.

Only other way to check it is with a set of guages and you will need a pro for that.
