We have a Kenmore side by side refridgerator and freezer that stopped cooling and freezing the other day. Model number is 253.52649305. Where do i begin to troubleshoot this thing?

First you have to determine if the compressor is running. You normally can hear it also you should be able to feel it vibrating and it should be warm. If it is running then either it is toast or you have a freon leak. If it is not running and the condenser fan and evaporator fans are not running you may be stuck in a defrost cycle. If it is not running but the fans are running it may be a compressor start relay problem, a thermostat problem or a compressor problem. Here are a couple good sites with troubleshooting info. http://www.applianceaid.com/frig.htmlRefrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com |

All of sudden the freezer has stopped working. I turned it up to the coldest setting and still it is not cold. It makes a humming sound for a few seconds, clicks and then turns off. This keeps repeating every few minutes. Any ideas if there is a way to fix this? thank you.

Sounds like a compressor problem. Could be just the start relay itself. The ACME link has info on how to check it. |

It is the overload that is clicking on the compressor. What I normally do on those refrigerators, when they are getting older, is to take off the overload and relay, and wire in a hard start kit. The part # is RCO-410. The instructions on how to install it is on the bag. Tom Appliance Educator, Appliance Parts, Washer and Dryer Parts, Refridgerator and Freezer Parts, Stove and Oven Parts
