Washer won't drain, fill or agitate for the rinse cycle

My machine is the; Whirlpool (Imperial Series Clean Touch, 8 cycle-2 speed) washer. Model # LST8244BQ1-12 years old. The washer works fine in the wash and spin cycles. The problem occurs when entering its rinse cycle in any of the different settings. The water won’t drain prior to it, and doesn’t agitate once it’s in the rinse cycle. The timer’s ticking can be heard and you can see it advancing through the cycles. If you pull the control knob out firmly and hold it there while it’s attempting to rinse, it will sometimes drain, fill and agitate, although, this seems to work intermittently in the delicate cycle only. Also, more often than not, after completing the spin cycle, the clothes will still be standing in half a tub of water. After looking at the forum I would imagine that it’s the timer. Does this sound like the most likely cause? Before I replace it, is there some way of eliminating the possibility of a bad lid switch instead?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Unfortunately, today it’s not consistently agitating in the wash cycle either. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If the timer is moving and nothing is happening it is not the lid switch, but you can check it out by opening up the consolde and using a jumper wire to by pass the lid switch.
If that is not the problem, the timer sounds like the likely culprit.

Thanks for the information. I've looked on the site for a tutorial on how to replace the timer, but I haven't found one. Could you please direct me to that?

This site will show you how to open the console. Kenmore top loader blues - SublimeMasterJW's Appliance AdviceYour screws may be in either the front or back. The timer knob will either unscrew or be released by removing a tab at the back. The timer can then be taken off, the wire harness unplugged and a new one put in.

Thanks for your help. I ordered it from the site. By the way, excellent customer service! I'm a novice so I will ask first-when I unplug the wire harness, will it just "pull" straight off? Anything to be aware of before hand so I don't end up disturbing those wires? Also, does that stem seated in the center of the timer need to be pulled out slightly from the back first with needle nose pliers to "unlock" the timer to make it removable?
Thanks again in advance!

Once you unscrew the knob from the timer, then the two screws that hold it to the console will come out and the timer will come off.
The wiring harness should be held on by tabs on the timer and plastic piece that holds the wires. Release the tabs and the harness piece should pull off. When you put it back on make sure all the connections are clean and nothing is bent so that full contact is made.
That should do it.

Hopefully it will be as easy as it sounds! Thanks very much, I'll let you know the outcome in a few days after the part arrives!

I was just trying to do a load of clothes and now I noticed that the agitator is kind of wobbling while it agitated. It also looked as if it slipped a few times while moving the clothes back and forth. Could this be an additional problem and somehow related to what's been intially happening? The dog ears were replaced about 6 months ago, so that wouldn't be an issue.

This should not be a part of your timer problem.
It may be that the agitator was not placed correctly when the dogs were replaced, or that the dogs have broken, but this latter is unlikely if they were just replaced.
I would take off the agitator, check it out and reseat it.

What great delivery-I already have the part that I ordered yesterday! Thank you!! Unfortunately, now I can’t remove the harness! The plastic tabs aren’t able to be pinched to release it. One side of the tab is pushed directly inside the framework of the timer body (nothing on the outside) and the opposite side has what looks like a tab that fits “woven” or “sandwiched” into the timer- half of the tab inside, the next portion outside of it. This semi exposed side I thought I could just pinch and then pull it out, but it’s not budging and I don’t want to just pull it off with force leading to maybe breaking it. Can you please tell me the best way to remove this?
