Is there any way to find a workable replacement for a defrost element ( GE part WR51X418) that has been discontinued?

There are two similar elements, WR51X194 and a GH267, both about 1 inch too short. I would go with the GH267 as it has sealed rubber ends, is more reliable and probably easier to fit it in. The other one has the same hard plastic ends that probably will not fit in place. Both elements are much cheaper than the original!!

You are welcome. Many times a substitute item can be found that is more reliable and much cheaper, just needs to be carefully selected.

Sorry for posting to an old thread but I was wondering if richappy could explain how he figured out what a suitable substitute would be. Is there a magical location where the resistance/voltage of the heater element can be found? Maybe it is in the repair manual for the device. It just seems that this type of information is not easily available. The reason I am asking is because I am facing a similar problem on a maytag refrigerator:

Thanks!

All defrost heaters draw between 300 - 400 watts with a standard 115 volts supplied. They just differ in length and diameter, some are iron cal-rod heaters, others are glass.
