The clothes dryer has started sporatically not getting hot enough in cycles. In fact, if you started the unit in timed dry at the hottest setting during one of these episodes, clearly it would not be getting to the desired temp.

Its a Kenmore Elite, SmartHeat (quietpak 9), HE4. One of the first of these units about 7-8 years ago when these side load washer/dryer sets first started going mainstream.

There is not a power supply problem.

I am wondering if the heating element (electric unit) is failing, but I am concerned there is a problem with the freaking $$control board$$.... Anyone please??

Here is the tech sheet

With this type of problem usually check/clean your vent system is the suggestion but since the problem is intermittent I doubt this is the cause.
Would not hurt to try it.

Try running the diagnostics.

Since you said the problem is intermittent it could be a loose/poor connection somewhere in the unit re: the thermistor.

Could also be a bad/cold solder joint on the control board.
Often a cold solder joint will be a gray color and/or have pin holes in it.
If you can see a component leg move on the solder side of the board when you gently wiggle a component then you also have a solder problem.

May also be that the board is going south.
