My Neptune dryer, although empty, makes a tapping sound at each revolution of the drum. The sound is like you would expect to hear if you were to tap the inside of the drum with the end of a leather belt. I would like to open the dryer to inspect around the drum, and it looks like you have to unlock the top lid somehow and simply lift the front of the lid and rotate it up and over, toward the back of the machine. Trick is, how do you "unlock" the top to do that without prying around with a screwdriver and breaking the white enamel to pieces? In advance ~ thanks!

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MDE5500AYW Dryer - Ele | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is the service manual

One thump per revolution may be a drum seal, a loose drum paddle or a bad front glide.

While you have it open you may as well check all moving parts basically do an overhaul.

I would also give the interior a good cleaning including the blower wheel.

Also since you are working on it, clean/check your vent system.
