Microwave unit makes a noise like birds chirping when running. When used for several minutes it powers off and remains off for 5 or 10 minutes. It can then be re-started and will continue to work with chirping sound until unit again powers off. Any idea what part may be causing this?

Thanks...

The first thing I would do is check the cooling fan (#79 on the diagram). Sounds like the magnetron overheats.

Hi Gene and thanks for getting back to me. How can I check out the fan without actually purchasing a new one? Also how do you get to the fan?

Thanks again!

You have to remove the top grill and open the control panel. First check the fan blade is in place and check the fan motor for continuity. If there is nothing wrong then turn the microwave "on" and see if the fan works.

Gene, The fan is what's making the noise. I'll go ahead and order a new one. Any tips on the installation.

Thanks so much for your help. Your diagnosis of the problem has been excellent.

George,

I'm afraid you'll have to remove the microwave from the cabinet to replace the fan motor.
