We have a GE side by side that stopped cooling this afternoon. The internal freezer fan is running. Could it be stuck in a defrost cycle? As far as I can tell there are 4 main parts controlling the temp: a temp sensor, a defrost thermostat, a circuit board at the temp knobs, and a mother board on the back of the machine. The compressor is not running but I am guessing that is because the brain is telling it not to. Our fridge was part of the frozen door recall/repair. This fridge has not been moved since purchased 7 years ago. No other service has been preformed other than door replacement.

I'm not an expert in this, just wanted to share my recent experience.

My fridge started clicking recently and the compressor would not start. After I unplugged the fridge, vacuumed the condenser coils (they were really dusty), and plugged the fridge back, the compressor started and seems to work fine now. Further investigation lead to the failed motherboard, but this is a different story. What I wanted to ask is if your condenser coils are dusty or not? If so, may be just cleaning them will help start the compressor, and you can go from there. Please don't forget to unplug the fridge if you are going to clean the condenser coils.

George.

When the unit shuts down for defrost, the fan in the freezer also shuts down.
I would check the starter/overload relay for the compressor.

For auto defrost failure
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat> Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com
Most new models don't have a timer and have an adaptive defrost control.
If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

replaced main control board. at the advice of a friend I took the board out of the back and noticed a black spot on the board.

Fixed problem immediately.
