Thanks so much for taking a look at my issue. My fridge has been intermittently warm for the last few weeks. Even though the temperature inside the freezer and fridge compartments is warm, none of the compressor, evaporator or condenser fans will come on. The interior light works normally at all times. Seemingly randomly, the compressor and both fans come on and the freezer and fridge compartments cool to a normal temperature. During the warm times, if I disconnect the fridge from the wall for a few minutes and reconnect the power, it seems as though the compressor and both fans will start after 30-60 seconds. I do not appreciate any clicking or buzzing sounds before the compressor starts. The ice maker appears to work properly. I've tried taking off the PTC and did not appreciate any rattling or burnt smell. Does anyone have any ideas? If the compressor, PTC or run capacitor were the issue, should the evaporator and condenser fans run even if the compressor does not start? Does this point to a bad thermostat or timer? Here are your parts Parts for KitchenAid KTRC19KKSS03 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.comWeird, usually unplugging a unit so it will rest only works with electronic units and yours is mechanical. If the compressor, PTC or run capacitor were the issue, should the evaporator and condenser fans run even if the compressor does not start? Yes they should because all 5 parts are wired in parallel. Does this point to a bad thermostat or timer? I am not sure. Next time it happens just move the temperature control up/down not to off. If the unit fires up then I would replace the control thermostat. If this does nothing try rotating the defrost timer cam. There is usually a hole in the cover so you can do this without dismantling anything. If it then fires up replace the timer. Be gentle as a bump of the control console may also reset the unit. |

Thanks so much for your response. In response to your suggestions, while the fridge was warming up, I moved the temperature control and found this interesting behavior. https://youtu.be/uKvL-IdIvDUAs you can see, the fridge clicks and the lights slightly dim as the control passes through the current temperature. Even more interestingly, not caught on the video, seemingly randomly, after the click, the compressor and both fans start for approximately one second and stop. Then even more intermittently, 30-60 seconds afterwards the compressor will start and cool to point set on the control (taking as long as 2 hours). Does this sound like a thermostat problem? Thanks again.

It does not strengthen the thermostat diagnosis but it also does not rule it out.
Just because the thermostat clicks does not mean that it's contacts are closing. |

Just because the thermostat clicks does not mean that it's contacts are closing. Denman, I just wanted to post and thank you for taking the time to help me. I ordered a new thermostat, installed it in less than 15 minutes and have a fridge that is working like new. I really owe you!
