My washer spins slowly with little torque,the motor and gearbox are rotating o.k. but I notice that the clutch pads are not making contact with the drum,can these be adjusted and how difficult is it to do so?

I would recommend you replace the clutch. Be sure you also check the drain system, including the pump and hoses.
