Replaced timer. no change

stops when door is opened, does not start when door is closed, need to push start button.

Heats fine.

Does not count down on any cycle. Just keeps going.

Any help appreciated.

Check for 240vac across timer BK to WB terminals with dryer running. If you don't have it, set timer to auto dry cycle, check for 120vac to ground at timer WB terminal with dryer running.

got both values 240 and 120v , less three volts in both cases when turned on.

With 240vac across BK to WB and timer in timed dry cycle, timer should advance. If not, the timer is bad. Not unheard of to get a "new" faulty timer. Timer purchased from APP can be returned if it doesn't fix the problem but there is really nothing else preventing the timer from advancing if you have the correct voltage.

After checking it appears that the timer moves when in timed mode, but it does not shut off. Does that make any difference?

Yes, at the very end of the timed dry cycle, the timer switches over to auto dry and auto dry advances timer to OFF. You say it heats ok but you may have a grounded heater element or a fault with the orange wire that goes from timer OR terminal to one of the heat element terminals. To check for grounded heat element, unplug dryer, disconnect heater terminals and check resistance between heater terminals and the metal heater box. Should read infinity (open).
