My freezer works great. But the bottom part of the refrigerator gets warm after about 2 weeks. I watched numerous videos and have become pretty knowledgable about defrost systems. So I pulled the back panel off in the freezer. Turned the defrost timer into defrost mode. Within 10 minutes, the heater started heating up and defrosted. I ordered a new defrost timer and replaced it. 1 week later. SAME THING. So I checked to see if heating element was getting hot. it was NOT. so I checked it with an ohms meter. Heater is good. So I saw a video to remove defrost thermostat and put in ice water to check for continuity. Nothing. I ordered a new defrost thermostat. Replaced it yesterday. Nothing...And I am getting power to the heater and defrost thermostat in defrost mode. I took the NEW defrost thermostat and put in ice water. Nothing. I'm stumped! Help!

I even took the new and old defrost thermostat and froze it in water....Took the leads on my ohms meter and as I let it into hot water...Nothing....Is that the correct way to test them?

Is that the correct way to test them?
Yes (sort of).
I am not sure why you put it in hot water.
It is the frozen state (0 ohms) that is important here.

I am not a big fan of immersing thermostats in water.
If any water leaks into it then it will be toast.
Either freeze it in another freezer or hold the metal face onto an ice cube.

Did you short the meter leads together before testing the thermostat just to be sure that the meter is OK

By nothing I am assuming you mean infinite ohms.

Yes...I zero(ed) the meter out and it's an analog meter. It was working properly, because i tested the thermostat in the bottom part of the refrigerator. The thermostat right in front of the defrost timer. By turning the setting from off to cool. It's working correctly. I just don't understand why i put it in defrost mode with the original defrost timer and old defrost thermostat, and the heater worked perfect. Put a new defrost timer, and new defrost thermostat, the heater will not come on. But there is no reading on the defrost theremostat on the OLD one and the NEW one either. Room temp or Cold temp.

Here are your parts includes a wiring diagram.
Parts for Frigidaire FRT18S6AWT Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.com

You will see on the wiring diagram that power ( line Black) for the compressor fans and defrost heater goes through the main control thermostat so perhaps try it again but set the thermostat to the coldest setting to be sure it is closed.

Also I am not sure that the problem is a defrost problem.
When you pulled the cover in the freezer were the coils clogged solid with ice/frost?
When you have a defrost problem the compressor will run all the time excert when the unit goes through a defrost cycle.

I cannot explain what is going on with the defrost thermostats.
Per haps you received a bad replacement and the original part is intermittant.
I can tell you that if it is deformed/bulged it should be replaced.

Well. I have fixed my defrost issue. They sent me a new defrost thermostat, and I installed it. Let it run about 30 minutes, turned defrost timer into defrost mode, pulled back panel off, heater is working correctly and melted the ice build up just fine. So the company just sent me a bad defrost thermostat. All is good. Thanks, and I hope this information is helpful.

WOW! You are blessed that you found the problem and cursed with the supplier sending you a bad part. The worst case scenario.
