My Roper electric dryer just quit yesterday. I believe the door switch works properly since the timer stops and starts when the switch is toggled. I took out the start switch and checked it with an amp meter and it zeros out when switched. When it still ran the timer dial would move to the end of a drying cycle but not switch the dryer off, thus it would run until someone opened the door. It usually took 80 or 90 minutes to dry a normal sized load so I am checking the vent tube and the screens for blocked air flow and heating was never an issue. If anyone has any advice, please respond? Could it be the actual timer that is the problem? Also should I get a voltage reading at the start switch when the timer is on? and which wire goes to which terminal on the switch? Thanks

Unplug the dryer,and take the back off, and there will be a white thin part, with 2 wires coming to it. That is the thermal fuse. Take the 2 wires off, and put the terminal ends together, and put some tape around it, so it does not hit metal, and then plug it in, and see if it works. If so do not run it like that, it is a saftey, replace it. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Yes. Check to see if it runs/shuts off in timed dry. Note that in auto mode the timer only gets power when the heater is shut off by the thermostat. Also should I get a voltage reading at the start switch when the timer is on? Depends where you are measuring from/to. It is not really related to the timer unless the BK/BU contacts in the timer are shot (open). It is a momentary contact so opens once released but the centrifugal switch on the motor has closed and keeps power going to the main winding of the motor. which wire goes to which terminal on the switch? Makes no difference, all that matters is that it closes. As Kayakcrzy said odds are high your thermal fuse is blown. Make sure to clean/check the vent system and the blower itself. |

Just wanted to drop a line and say thanks for the reply to both kayakcrzy and denman. I took the thermal fuse out and checked it and it was indeed junk. I ordered it yesterday and should be back up and running in a few days. I also found that my wife had dropped a nylon brush down the exhaust vent when cleaning the lint and the entire intake for the blower was about 80% blocked. This should improve the drying efficiency greatly. As far as the timer issue goes, the timer dial actually moves on either timed dry or the auto seeting but just never actually shuts the dryer off. Is that a thermostat issue or just the timer itself? Thanks again,

Not shutting off on either timed or auto would be the timer.
Timer contacts BK/BU are welded together. |

Tom ******************************************** if the thermal fuse, door switch, push to start button all have continuity what else can it possibly be?
