my washer makes noise only when it spins but if I hold the agitator while it is spinning the noise stops.

I'm afraid that's a worn agitate cam in the gearcase. Unless your prepared to tear the gearcase down, you will need to just replace it.

thanks for the info Eric. I am not sure what I will do. Maybe just run it until she quits then buy a new washer?

Eric I took the tranny apart and everything looked good so I put it all back to gather and it still makes that noise, how would the agitate cam cause it to make that noise? thanks tzdriver.

The agitate cam consists of two parts, the cam and cam follower. The cam follower remains stationary while the cam is rotated a few degrees in either direction to engage or disengage the agitate gear from the agitator shaft. The cam parts can wear to the point that when the agitate gear is lifted to disengage it from the agitator shaft, the cam does not lift it far enough to fully disengage it. The noise you hear is the internal splines of the agitate gear rubbing against the splines on the agitator shaft.
