My GE side by side was cooling but not getting cold enough. Been through two repair companies & one month later still not right. I vacuumed out hair, fur, dust, from coils.
Compressor is running, warm & vibrating . Condenser fan runs. Evaporator fan runs. The bi metal was bad & was replaced. Defrost heater was supposedly ok. No change. Next motherboard replaced. No change. Freezer coil frost up. Next company said it was the defrost heater and thermistor. Wanted $300 to fix. Said bye bye to that company.
I ordered the parts from you (alot less than $300). I installed the defrost heater and thermistor. Fresh food side is about 38 degrees freezer stays at 20 maybe down to 15 degrees. What else?

Unplug fridg. and remove the 3 pin power connector on the bottom of the motherboard. Put a wire jumper between the connector pins marked on the motherboard line and def.
Plug in fridg. ,it should now defrost, if not, you have a problem with the defrost circuit.

Hi Richappy

If it turns out to be a problem with the defrost circuit is that an expensive repair?
I also don't think I have a jump line. I am not an electrician or repair person. Just a lady trying to either get fridge fixed by repair techs who don't do a real diagnosis or fix it myself. Or not waste more money & buy a new one, which I can't afford. I willing to try. Where would I get a jump line, hardware store?

Hi Richappy
When connecting the defrost heater, does it matter which way the wire end connector clip onto the heater tabs? I wanted to be sure, since the repair tech took out the part and I had no reference as far as the connections.

No, the heaters are non-polar. You may have connected the wire terminal in the wrong slot of the heater, there are two of them, one blank.

Hi Richappy
i got the connectors on the tabs. I saw the empty side. What about the repair cost of the faulty defrost circuit?

Try the test I mentioned before, use a piece of wire. That will determine if your motherboard is bad. Sometimes bad motherboards are shipped.

If you get a partial defrost, the thermistor might be bad, a thin, white item clipped to the top of the evaporator.
