Hi all,

I have a bottom freezer kenmore that started running warm then cold about 5 days ago. I have done the following so far checked and cleaned the coils underneath and from the back. The fan in the back by the compressor is running, the compressor is running but on the hot side, I can touch it but it is pretty warm. There is no frost or ice on the coil in the back of the freezer I replaced the defrost thermostat 3 years ago when it was icing up. It will be cold 25-30 in the fridge and 10-15 in the freezer with the controls sey to max cold and stay that way for a day or two then it warms up for awhile to about 50 in the fridge then cools down again. Today the fridge was 26 degrees at 5:15 am when I left for work, it was at 52 degrees when I got home at 3pm its now cooled back down to 32 degrees at 4pm. Is this a defrost problem again ? The defrost timer running to long? Ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

When the refrigerator warms up, what does the freezer temperature do? Does it warm up also?

Yes the freezer warms up when the fridge does. Not sure how much the freezer comes up in temp since the thermometer is in the fridge part. I can use an infrared and get a temp if that will be helpful. AT 4 pm today the fridge had dropped back to 32 degrees and now at 6:30 pm its back to 51 degrees.

Thanks,
Jeff

The fan moving the air from the freezer to the fridge is running, sounds like the compressor is running but i will pull the fridge out and try to verify that for fact.

Thanks,
Jeff

Thank you! If the fan is running when it warms, I suspect the compressor may not be starting. Have you heard any clicking or buzzing noises from the compressor area?

I haven't heard either noise but the fridge is recessed into the cabinets with a surround around it. I will move it out and pay attention to it Saturday and let you know.

Thanks,
Jeff

I pulled the fridge out and when it warms up the compressor is not running. There is a click sound but no humming. I can also turn the temp dial all the way to warm then back to the coldest setting there is a clicking sound from the compressor but no vibration like its running it is hot though.

Thanks,
Jeff

That is very helpful, thank you! On the side of the compressor is the start device. With the refrigerator unplugged, remove that component and shake it. Does it rattle?
