I have a Kenmore electric dryer (Model No. 110 86568100) that just stopped working last night. I push the start button, but nothing happens. I unplugged the dryer and took off the top of the dryer control panel. Nothing looked to be burned or out of place. Does anyone have any ideas that may help me out? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Check the door switch. Push it in you should hear a click. Most common problem.

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for KENMORE 11086568100 | AppliancePartsPros.com
Check the power.
Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times.
Sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker.
If this does nothing, check the voltage at the plug
L1 to L2 should be 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts.
If OK
Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out
If OK
Check the power at the terminal strip.
Be careful as 240 volts is lethal !!!

Check the thermal fuse (second item in parts list), it is mounted on the blower assembly.
Unplug the unit and check the fuse with a meter should be 0 ohms.

Jiggery Pokery method is.
Unplug the unit.
Remove both wires from the fuse, short them together and tape them up so they will not short to the frame.
Plug the unit in and give it a try.

If blown, replace the fuse ASAP as it is a critical safety device re: prevents lint fires which can turn into house fires.

Also clean/check your vent system and the blower as these are the most common causes of it blowing.

Check the start switch.

If you do not own a meter, I would suggest you purchase a one. You can get a decent digital multimeter for under $20.00. You do not need fancy though it is nice if the leads are a couple feet long.
If it saves ordering one unnecessary part it has paid for itself and you end up owning a useful tool.
Most places will not let you return electrical parts so if you order it, you own it.
A couple things to watch when measuring ohms and continuity
1. Always remove power from the machine otherwise you could blow your meter.
2. Always disconnect at least one side of any device you are checking. This eliminates the possibility of measuring an alternate/parallel circuit path.
3. When checking for closed contacts and continuity use the lowest scale (Usually 200 ohms). Then try higher scales. This scale is 0 to 200 ohms so if the device you are measuring is 300 ohms this scale would show an open circuit which it is not, you are just measuring outside the scale's dynamic range.

There is a good STICKY at the start of this forum about it's use.

So far I have had to flip the dryer breakers to get the dryer going twice in about 2 weeks. We inherited a Kenmore Elite HE 110 when we bought our house. I'm wondering if I should do some maintenance on the dryer to see if it is adding pressure on the line. Could a buildup of lint be overheating the unit and making it work too hard?

I'm reasonably handy, but have been a renter for 15 years, so haven't done any sort of dryer work since I left all that to the landlords.

Thanks!

Is your unit the same model number?

Always a good idea to clean/check the vent system every year of at least every second year.
