Our GE WCSE3100 washer works, but makes loud grinding noises during agitation and the spin cycle. I took the washer apart and the clutch is grinding on the clutch spring clip. The clutch has been ground down very unevenly almost to the retaining clip on the clutch.

I've checked the drive block, the apron, suspension rods, and transmission pulley. They all seem fine.

I can replace the clutch and spring clip, but will that fix the clutch from grinding on the clutch spring clip?

The only way you can have relative motion between the clutch and spring clip is if the motor shaft drive pin is missing. You need to remove the clutch from the motor shaft to check the pin. It is a roll pin and is not a normal replacement part as far as I know. You will have to find a suitable substitute. The pin drives the clutch so there should never be any relative motion between the clutch and spring clip.

Thanks, Eric! The roll pin seems to fit the clutch ok. Here's a pic of the clutch and the roll pin. (I put a white sheet of paper on the floor of the washer so you can see the metal dust.)

Here's a pic of the clutch. You can see how worn the top of the clutch is where it meets the spring clip.

Here's a video so you can hear the washer noises.

Take the clutch apart so you can examine it. Here's a couple pic's of one I have on the bench. The motor shaft roll pin fits into the recess in the clutch and the spring clip fits over the end of the motor shaft so the clutch and spring clip should be rotating in unison. The only way the clip can wear the clutch is if the roll pin is not engaged or the clutch is broken. Never seen that before.

Those pics were very helpful! Thank you again.

The roll pin engages the clutch. So I checked the inside of my clutch. It's very worn. You can see in the pic that the bottom and sides have been ground down. Could the unevenness of the clutch cause the clutch to grind on the clutch spring clip?

I have replaced the roll pin a couple times because the original roll pin broke. I first tried an OEM part, but it was 1.75" long, and wouldn't fit the clutch. So I used a 3/16"x1" roll pin, which is slightly smaller than the hole in the motor shaft and it moved around a little. I think the small size of the roll pin caused the unusual wearing inside of the clutch. When I fixed the washer another time, I couldn't find the roll pin and replaced it with a 1/4"x1" roll pin. This size of roll pin fits snugly inside the motor shaft.

So I probably just need a new clutch?

Yes, I'd say you definitely need a new clutch. The question is, why is your roll pin breaking? Does the washer spin and agitate ok? Is it easy to rotate the motor pulley by hand in either direction? Spin direction will be a little more difficult but still relatively easy. Use two hands in spin direction to keep the brake disengaged. If it's real stiff, you have other issues.

Not sure what caused the roll pin to break, but it's only happened once. The motor pulley rotates easily in both directions. I'll put in a new clutch, which will arrive in a week. I'll give you an update then.

Thanks again, Eric!

The washer is fixed! I had to use a different sized roll pin (5/32 x 3/4), but everything is working and the washer is very quiet now. Thanks so much, Eric!!
