Hello Gene,
Sorry to jump into this post but I need your help trying to figure out what is wrong with my Whirlpool ice maker.It works sporadically now it hasn't worked in days.The LEDs are blinking twice and then pause it doesn't matter if I push the flapper closed or not does not seem to have a light beam from one side to the other.Does this mean the LED Emitter - Receiver is bad.

Gene,
How do I remove the ice maker to get the back cover of the freezer off for inspection of the coils? There are two screws holding the body of the ice maker to the inside wall of the freezer, but after those are removed, does the maker just slide out? I don't want to mess up any gears or controls to the mechanism that turns to remove the ice cubes.

I have a GE Side by Side GSH25KGND. The back wall is all frosted up and frozen. About two years ago I had same problem and replaced heater and all has been fine since then. I checked the heating element and I get like 22 resistance, so I guess that is good. The element does not look great but it must be working from what I got on the tester. I cut the thermostat off and checked it after putting it into a glass of ice water and get 000 so I guess that is a good part too. Does this unit/refredge have a defrost timer? I think it is in the mother board, correct? Is there any checks I can do to tell if mother board is good or bad? From what I gather mother board is what i need to change. I actually gor a free one from GE some time ago when I read that they were going bad and getting replaced a lot. When I called GE they sent me one but I never put it on. I guess I need to now. Any thoughts? My serial number is RD233294. Not sure what year my unit it but Im guess 6 to 8 years at least.

You already did the troubleshooting and proved that the control board should be replaced.

Can you test the termostat at room tempature? If so what would the meter show? The reason I ask, before I purchase a mother board I want to make sure it is just not a bad thermostat. Right now, i am getting the same reading cold and warm on the termostat, all OOO. I even tested a brand new one and got the same readings. Any advice would be great.

Hi.
At 77*F the resistance of the thermistor sould be around 4.92 Kohms. Make sure you are using correct scale.

You are correct I miss typed. I do have mother board but don't want to install if its not mother board. I want to make sure we are on the same page. I wanted to test the termostat not the termistor. It looks like the termistor is easy to test so I cut it off and testedd. At room temp I got 4.62K

Just checked again and it reads 4.18 on thermistor

Brian, what thermostat do you have in mind? You allready checked the defrost one. If I'm not mistaken it shows continuity in the ice water.
But anyway, you can test the defrost circuit from the control board. Unplug the unit, locate plug J7 pin 9 (the top one), and 3 wire plug just above it. Check the continuity between J7, pin 9 and wire which is marked Defrost. Remove one of the plugs. You should read the defrost heater's resistance. Make sure the thermostat is ice cold. If the circuit is open - replace the defrost thermostat.
