I opened my freezer door and heard a crackling sound, while investigating the sound I observed red hot coils in the lower rear section of my freezer ( visible with the door open) I immediately unplugged the refrigerator. I did not observe any excessive ice build up.

The next day I plugged it back in it seemed to run for several hours ok. that night For saftey I unpluged it. the net day It started to overheat again. after unplugging the unit and plugging it back in a couple of hours later. it seems to be running ok again.

Any help would be appreciated.

You probably have a shorted defrost thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator. You can order it on this site.

Thanks Richappy,

So can I assume that the timer turns the defrost cycle on and the thermostat ends the cycle then? I will order the part. Do I replace that from the rear or the inside of the freezer ?

You pull off the freezer back panel, you will find it on top of the evaporator coils.
