Our 6 year old refrigerator & freezer both stopped cooling. I want to determine whether to call a repair person (beginning at $80 and more $ from there) or just buy a new refrigerator.
I unplugged the unit for a day, then plugged it back in. Both the fridge and freezer still did not cool. The compressor motor, condensor fan and the freezer fan were all running. There are no abnormal noises.
I checked the following: the compressor motor windings read 0 ohms between all combinations of the 3 motor terminals. The starting capacitor on the compressor motor read OK.
Based on this info, do you think that either the compressor has failed or the refrigerant leaked out? If so, I'll buy a new fridge. What other causes could there be? Thanks.

If the compressor is hot and vibrating, with no ocasional clicking sounds, youi have a system problem, probably leaked refrigerant and damaged the compressor.
