The problem I'm having with this icemaker is that some of the cubes are frozen properly while approx. half come out as as an ice shell. The cubes are hollow - basically a thin shell of ice. Any suggestions on a cause and repair.

It sounds like you're losing water pressure to the refrigerator. I've seen this happen before with the self piercing saddle valves. The rubber gasket under the piercing needle starts to break apart and occasionally gets caught in the hole. Shut the valve off and disconnect the water line then open it again and check the water pressure. Get a bucket ready.
