My washer won't spin. It just suddenly stopped and when I found it, there was a burning rubber smell emanating from it. Thinking it was the belt, I opened my machine.
When I popped open the front panel, I noticed that one part was particularly hot. It was radiating heat. It's the brown heatsink-looking like thing in the picture below.

What is that brown thing? Is that the motor, transmission, or something else? And what's wrong with my washing machine? I checked the belt already, and it isn't broken, and it looks to be in place.

Can't see the pictures but assume your talking about the motor. With the washer unplugged, rotate the small pulley on the motor counterclockwise (looking from bottom). It should rotate easily and the agitator should move back and forth while you rotate the pulley (have someone else observe the agitator). Now turn the pulley in the opposite direction. This should rotate the whole transmission and it will help to push on the transmission while trying to rotate the pulley in this direction. The basket should rotate while you are doing this. It will be harder to rotate in this direction than in the agitate direction but shouldn't be overly stiff or binding. Now plug the washer back in and put it into spin mode. The shaft of the motor protrudes down below the motor pulley and there is a clip on the end of it. If the shaft and clip are spinning but the pulley is not, then the clutch is slipping. The clutch is inside the pulley. If the pulley is spinning but the large pulley under the transmission is not, then the belt is slipping. If both pulleys are spinning but the transmission is not, there are transmission issues. If the transmission is spinning but the basket is not, there are issues with the tub attachment. Report your findings.
