Hi I have a 2004 maytag performa top-load washer (model PAVT454EWW). During the last washing load the machine began making a grinding nosie when it got to the spin cycle and the smell of burning rubber filled the air. When we moved the washer we found bits of burnt rubber under the machine. When opened, the belt looks okay but the pulley seems ruined. Is this the problem? Does the pulley need to be replaced? If so, how do I remove the pulley from the motor? How do I open the machine to get to the pulley? or is it just the belt that needs replacing? please advise\thanks

Pull the machine out away from the wall, enough to tilt it back against the wall. The belt will walk off the large center pulley, as long as the motor will pivot inward. Try to turn the drain pump pulley by hand. It should turn freely, without resistance. If it grinds, and is hard to turn, replace it. Now, turn the large white pulley ond direction and have a friend see if the agitator is moving back and forth. turn it the other direction and see if the spinner (inner basket) spins. If you hear a grinding noise while trying to spin the spinner, pretty likely, the trouble is the thrust bearing is worn. (The thrust bearing helps release the brake for spinning.) A replacement thrust bearing kit includes a replacement pulley. If you're replacing any one of these components, also replace the belt. Part number: AP4009132
