element light came on - have not noticed anything wrong. Is it possible that light comes on and nothing is wrong.

A model number may help others help you.

If you mean the element on light then odds are that the infinite switch needs replacing. Usually there are a set of contacts in the switch that turn this light on.
Having it on all the time is a safety hazard as you never know when the element is truly off.

If you mean the hot surface light then this is usually controlled by a thermostat under the cook top.
