I have what I consider a new fridge. I have no experience in the field so I can't guess it's age.
Right now it doesn't cool at all. It just completely stopped one day. To get an estimate on repair the least I'll have to pay is $70 which would suck if the repair would cost too much or not last very long compared to completely replacing the fridge.
I've had the fridge for about 8 months and its always worked flawlessly. I didn't adjust anything before it cut out. Both the freezer and refrigerator parts are affected. Its never had water hooked up for ice making / filtration even though it came with the hook ups.
That's about all the information I can think up ;)

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath the fridge is running.
Is the compressor motor near that fan running.
Are the coils warm ,cold or hot.

Ok. here's pictures of the backside of my fridge http://home.comcast.net/~ghen/temp/f1.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~ghen/temp/f2.jpgThe white fan in front of the radiator looking thing turns on and sounds fine, no extra noises. So what parts are supposed to be hot or cold? I'm going to let it run for a few minutes and then edit this post. btw, is it too dirty? And, can I clean it with a shop vac? edit: Ok, everything in there is basically room temperature after 10 minutes. The big black thing is moderately cold, but it does have a fan blowing directly on it. I don't know where to find the compressor motor. edit2: you guys really have a nice parts viewer here. Its very fast compared to pdf and shows everything in a way that I can understand.

ok, after letting it run for 3 hours the black thing (compressor?) is now warm/hot to the touch. everything else is room temperature.

One of the copper pipes coming out of the black thing (compressor)should be cold. radiator thing (condenser coils)should be warm. May be compressor problem or freon leak. You would need a repairman in either case.

Ok, so what's it cost to have a repair man fix this if its either of those problems.
Also I've heard that freon leaks are hard to find and fix.

Feel the compressor, does it vibrate like it is running, if not, you may have a blown compressor start device mounted on the side of the compressor behind a cover. Remove the device (a black square thing) and check if it rattles, if so, just order a new one. Part # AP3796066

the compressor doesn't rattle at all, it just got warm. I'll check the other device when I go home. thanks :)

Before you order a start device, measure the start winding resistance to make sure the compressor start winding is ok, if no meter, then just order the device.

Yep, that went way over my head. lol. I'm not sure if this is something I want to tackle on my own... thats why I wondered what it would cost for a pro to fix it if it were the compressor. or something similar.
