We have had refrigerator for five years. We have never replaced the water filter. This morning the filter began leaking profusely. Can the filter process be sidestepped? How do I stop the leak?

Turn off the water supply for the refrigerator. Remove the water filter as described in the Owners manual. Remove the water filter housing (#27 on the diagram) and inspect the water lines to the housing and the housing itself. Replace any broken parts and the water filter. The water filter has to be replaced every six months. - The water filter Part number: AP3182816

I'll try replacing the filter because I'm having the same problem. But I'm wondering why it still leaked out of the filter canister when I took the filter out. Can the unit run without a filter?
