I replaced the heating element and was going to replace the thermostat. Then noticed I that the timer was not advancing as it should. Everything else seems to check out okay, should I continue and replace the timer and/or thermostat?

If the timer will not advance on any cycle your timer needs to be replaced. I usually pull the cover off to check for bad contacts. Sears calls for two different timers for this dryer. I would get the timer part # printed on the timer and order it.
