i don't know what controls the defrost. my second shelf gets frost the worst & the rest eventually gets bad. the door will eventually get pushed open by the frost. the seals around the door are not leaking, that i can tell. i think the thermostat might be the answer. i don't have the schematic.i have found a list of the parts for my freezer & the only thing i can see that makes sense is the thermostat. i hope not to be a parts changer so any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time.

Cannot see how the thermostat could cause icing up.
You could check the internal temperature with a thermometer.
Should be around 0 degrees F

Your second shelf may frost up first because it may be the first rack that gets the freon from the compressor so has the highest cooling efficiency.

Recheck your door seals especially the hinge side if it is not closing/sealing easily rub some vaseline along the gasket. Have you done the dollar bill check to be sure it is sealed and just does not look sealed.

The humidity causing the frosting is coming from somewhere and if it is not from the outside then it is from the inside.
Are you leaving items in the freezer unwrapped re: ice cubes etc.?
Are you seeing freezer burn on items, often an indicator of poor wrap type.

i sure appreciate the time the insight. i am a hvac repair tech. this is the first freezer i have tried to work on. what you said makes sense and i will give it a shot. i thought that maybe the thermostat had the defrost built into it, because i could not find the defrost in the parts list.

There is no defrost in these units.

I have the same type of unit and have to manually defrost it about once a year.
