I have a 5 year old Roper gas dryer and I occasionally get black spots (carbon?) on my clothes after drying. Is this carbon buildup in the burner? Also it has gotten increasingly noisier...Bad rollers? Where do I start?

Bandman,

First thing to check, is the dryer level ? especially front to back.

Depending on the model, you may be able to open the lower front panel, and check for soot in the burner chamber, discoloration doesn't count.

What kind of noise does the dryer make, squeeling, rumbling, etc. and from where, front, back, top, bottom, etc.

Make sure you never fill the dryer more than 1/2 full with a wet load of clothes. You'll be a lot more efficient, and happier with the results.

What do the spots look like, in most cases, if articles are getting pinched between the drum and bulkhead, the marks look like a large, dark pencil mark, not a spot.

Let us know what you find, and get us a model number, and we can be a bit more helpful.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

It is a Roper Model RGX6634PQ0 gas dryer. In researching this I realized that the label specified natural gas and I'm using propane...I've been using it for 5 years...Is this an issue as far as the black spots. These are randon specks and they are look and feel like charcoal so I'm assuming it's carbon. Dryer is level...There is some "play" in the drum, slides front to back a bit...

Bandman,

That could explain it.

Are you sure it was not converted to LP gas by the previous owner, or by the dealer when you purchased the dryer ?

If you are on LP gas and operating on Nat gas settings, you'll have an improper burn, and have lots of soot and carbon in the unit.

You may want to order and install the LP Conversion kit, just to be sure.

It doesn't sound like a load size or tumbler problem.

Used the dryer one more time before taking it apart to clean it and now it will not light. Disassembled it, cleaned it and did see some carbon but now I can't get the dryer to light. What is the problem now?

Bandman,

You didn't turn the gas supply off or anything like that, yet ?

We're going to need to observe the ignition procedure, so we have a better idea of what's happenning.

There's two(2) ways to go, You'll need to be careful, either way.

1.) Remove the 1 X1 inch square plastic cover attached to the front panel.
2.) Start the dryer in a heat cycle, preferably on the highest heat setting.
3.) Using the peep hole and listenning closely,
a, You should hear a click, when the dryer is started.
b, In a few seconds, you should see the igniter start to glow, orange.
c, After 20 to 30 seconds of glow, you'll hear another click, the igniter
glow will start to fade, and the burner gas should ignite and produce a
flame.

You can do the same test, once you remove the front panel, drum, etc. and bypass the door switch, to make the unit operable.

I think we have a coincidental, failure.

Let us know what you observe, and we can get you going from there.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

I performed the test lastnight and there's nothing happening...no click that I could detect either at first or 20-30 seconds later. Nothing glowed orange...nothing happened. Where do I go from here...getting sick of walking to the clothesline...:0)

Bandman,

OK then,

You'll need to check the glow bar igniter,
to see if it is cracked or broken, with a multi meter, you should read 50 to 500 ohms resistance across the two(2) wires of the igniter.

Part number: AP3094138

Also check the radiant sensor, for a "closed" circuit, with the wires removed from the brass terminals on the sensor.

Part number: AP2910747
Part number: AP2910747

Then you'l need to check for 120 VAC at the coil assembly on top of the gas valve.
You'll need to disconnect the both connector assemblies, start the dryer in a high heat cycle, and check for voltage across the Blue and White wires, in both connectors, that will tell us if we lost a timer or thermostat in the heat circuit.
