My guess is that the RELAY-OVERLOAD on the Compressor has failed,If this is a whirlpool built unit, its quite common, Please list the COMPLETE Model#

Drags is probably correct, there are a few posts on here for testing components, But you should(if not already done) unplug the unti. Don't want a simple relay/overload issue to become a sealed system problem.

Thank you, I was hoping it would be something simple like that. Yes, it is unplugged now but it went a whole day until my wife told me about the problem. Do you think that may have caused additional damage??

Ok, test the relay first, it should be a little white colored box attached to the compressor, take it off and shake it, if it rattles that's probably your problem.
